It is indeed confusing. Some say they are the same, some say they are different.
If you are only going to be using it as a thickener then it wouldn't matter. Both will work.
However, don't mistake cornflour or cornstarch with cornmeal. They are totally different.

I guess your only option would be to try it. If it works great, if not :(
